We all must consider cleaning and behavior changes to help keep our community safe.
We’re extremely proud of the hygiene standards our community of van owners offer, and this is clear to see from the number of five-star reviews. Understandably, holidaymakers are likely to be as concerned about coronavirus as you are, so we’re asking our community to take extra measures during this time.
We’ve detailed below some advice for our van owners to help protect themselves and their hirers, including simple behavior changes and top tips to enhance cleaning regimes.
Hirers may want to find out more about the cleanliness of your van to help them feel at ease. Consider adding information about the cleaning routine you follow and types of products you use to the hiring rules of your listing.
Cleaning your van
Cleaning your vehicles with disinfectant and antibacterial/antiviral cleaner before and after each rental is the first step to prevent the spread of germs between travelers. Pay special attention to areas travelers touch often such as seats, steering wheels, tables, counters and door handles. Here are a few important cleaning and hygiene recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)*:
- Disinfect surfaces often, and especially between every stay
- Clean dirty surfaces with soap and water prior to disinfecting.
- To disinfect, you can use diluted bleach solutions, alcohol-based products with 70% alcohol. You can find a list of EPA approved household disinfectants here
- Pay extra attention to areas that are touched regularly, such as doorknobs, drawer pulls, the toilet flush lever, faucet handles, remote controls, and light switches.
- For the best results, let your cleaning solution stand. Wait 3-5 minutes before wiping a sprayed surface to give it time to really disinfect. When using antibacterial wipes, like for cleaning remote controls and other electronic items, you may need to use more than one wipe for the surface to remain wet long enough to properly disinfect.
- Porous surfaces (a surface that allows the passing through of water, liquid or vapour, furniture, carpet, rugs, etc.)
- Vacuum thoroughly and clean stains with a suitable disinfectant
If possible, launder and disinfect these items -
Laundered items (linens, towels, etc.)
- Wash towels and linens using the warmest water possible based on the care instructions
- Please provide separate hand towels for each guest
- Please do not shake dirty laundry to minimise the possibility of dispersing the virus through the air

Help guests prevent germs from spreading
You can start by stocking your space with plenty of tissue, disposable paper towels, hand soap, and hand sanitizer.
Protect yourself when cleaning
If you don’t use a professional cleaner, help guard against germs by wearing gloves, especially when handling trash, food scraps, and other waste. And remember to wash your hands when you’re done. If you can, consider swapping your waste bins for the hands-free variety.
Wash your hands regularly.
Make sure you’re using soap and warm water, and scrub for at least 20 seconds before you rinse. Regular hand washing is always a good idea, and it’s especially important if you greet your guests in person. Please keep a safe distance, and avoid hand-shaking, or other forms of close contact.
Keep a sanitiser handy
Be sure to have hand sanitiser with you in case you don’t have immediate access to soap and water.
Avoid touching your face
According to Healthline studies have found that people touch their faces more than 16 times an hour. We touch our faces so often that the odds of recontaminating our hands between washings are extremely high. So try to keep that in mind the next time you feel an itch in your nose.
Ask your hirer before they arrive; Do you have any symptoms? Have you been exposed to anyone who has any symptoms? Have you been around anyone who has recently returned from overseas?
Remember social distancing when handing over (see guidance here). Social distancing includes ways to stop or slow the spread of infectious diseases. It means less contact between you and other people.
Social distancing is important because COVID-19 is most likely to spread from person-to-person through:
- direct close contact with a person while they are infectious or in the 24 hours before their symptoms appeared
- close contact with a person with a confirmed infection who coughs or sneezes, or
- touching objects or surfaces (such as door handles or tables) contaminated from a cough
- or sneeze from a person with confirmed infection, and then touching your mouth or face.
- So, the more space between you and others, the harder it is for the virus to spread.
Stay at home
Most importantly, if you are feeling ill or have been in contact with someone who got symptoms, stay at home. If you have bookings, please contact us as soon as possible. Where possible, work with a close friend or family member to do the handover in your place. You may even reach out to fellow Camplify community members who may be able to offer assistance.
