Tasmania: Hire & Drive

Everything you need to know about listing a drivable van in Tasmania on Camplify

Do I need my own operator accreditation?

No, Camplify is a recognised Hire & Drive Operator in Tasmania, accredited under number 419295777. You can operate under Camplify's credentials and do not need to obtain individual accreditation.

Download and print our Accreditation Certificate; you will need to apply for Class 8 Hire and Drive registration.

Does my van qualify as a hire & drive vehicle?
Any drivable vehicle rented out for the hirer to drive must be registered as a hire & drive vehicle. This includes campervans, motorhomes and tow vehicles.

What inspection does my van need?
Your van must pass a safety inspection every 6 months or 10,000km (whichever comes first)

The safety inspection can be a vehicle service undertaken by an authorised dealership, a qualified mechanic or a roadworthiness inspection at an Approved Inspection Station (AIS).

The RV must be checked for compliance with the Light Vehicle Inspection Manual (up to 4.5 tonnes GVM) or Heavy Vehicle Inspection Manual (over 4.5 tonnes GVM). Please ask the person inspecting your RV to provide safety inspection checklists covering all roadworthiness and safety-related items. The Tasmanian Government requires that the report/checklist identify the specific items that were inspected.

If an inspection due date for your van falls within a proposed hiring period, the van must not go out on hire unless the safety inspection has been completed

How do I complete the mandatory Pre-Hire Checklist?
This is your Pre-Hire Checklists via the Camplify App. When a booking starts, follow the prompts to complete the checklist. Pre and Post-Hire Checklists are mandatory and must be completed for each booking. The checklist is available to download for both the hirer and owner.

What do I do if my vehicle has a mechanical fault?
You must log the fault immediately. Under Tasmanian law, we must maintain a record of all faults and repairs. If the fault affects the safety of the vehicle, you must not hire out the vehicle until the fault has been cleared.

Do I need a special registration for Hire and Drive?
Yes. Your vehicle must hold a Class 8 registration, including payment of the Motor Accidents Insurance Board (MAIB) premium for hire and drive use. Depending on the age of your vehicle, this may also include conducting a roadworthiness inspection at an Approved Inspection Station (AIS) before it can be registered as a hire & drive vehicle.

What are the Roadworthiness inspection requirements for my van?
What's required depends on your van's age and current registration status:

  • Already registered in TAS, under 3 years old: No PPV inspection needed — proof of identity and payment only.
  • Already registered in TAS, over 3 years old: An approved Public Passenger Vehicle (PPV) inspection report is required.
  • Not yet registered in TAS: Both a light vehicle inspection report and a PPV inspection report are required, plus proof of entitlement documents.

Find your nearest AIS at transport.tas.gov.au.

Once registered as a hire & drive vehicle, your van must be inspected on a regular basis:

  • 3–15 years old: Annual roadworthy inspection.
  • Over 15 years old: Inspection every 6 months.
  • Safety inspection: Every 6 months or every 10,000 km — whichever comes first. A roadworthiness inspection also qualifies as a safety inspection.

It is your responsibility as the owner to keep inspections up to date and to upload your documents to your Camplify listing with the accurate expiry date. You will receive automatic reminders prior to renewal to ensure you are one step ahead. Keep an eye on the kilometres in case the 10,000km limit comes up before the 6-month expiry.

How do I upgrade my standard registration to Hire and Drive?
Visit Service Tasmania in person and bring:

  • Camplify's printed Accreditation Certificate
  • Your Public Passenger Vehicle (PPV) inspection report (if required)
  • Your current proof of identity (Tasmanian driver's licence or approved documents)

Important: Request an upgrade to Class 8 Hire & Drive Registration. A pro-rata increase to your Motor Accidents Insurance Board (MAIB) premium will be applied at this time. Call Service Tasmania on 1300 135 513 or visit service.tas.gov.au to find your nearest centre.

Can I include a National Parks pass with my hire?
No — National Parks passes cannot be included with hires unless the pass owner is personally present at the park entry. Do not offer a National Parks pass as part of your listing inclusions.

Why has my listing been suspended?
Drivable vans listed for hire in Tasmania must be registered as a Hire & Drive vehicle under Tasmanian law. Standard vehicle registration alone is not sufficient. The team regularly completes audits to maintain compliance. If your listing has been suspended, this means the above requirements are not met — you cannot accept bookings until the process is complete.

What do I need to submit to Camplify to get my listing reactivated?
Once your inspections and registration upgrade are complete, you can log into Listings > Manage > Documents and upload the following:

  • Completed PPV inspection report if the vehicle is over 3 years old.
  • Updated Class 8 registration certificate showing MAIB premium

Your listing will be reviewed and reactivated once we have confirmed everything is in order. You must not accept any bookings until this is confirmed.

What happens if I hire out my van without complying?
Hiring out a vehicle in Tasmania that is not registered as a hire & drive vehicle is a breach of Tasmanian law and can result in fines and penalties issued directly to the van owner.

Camplify takes compliance seriously and reserves the right to remove listings from search results and deactivate owner accounts for any vehicle found to be operating in breach of state transport regulations or Camplify’s safety and compliance standards. Please complete all requirements before accepting bookings.
